MPG Whilst Towing

Having never towed anything larger than a small garden trailer, last month I was faced with a 200 mile journey to pick up a recently purchased Swift Accord 500. My car is a VW Passat 1.9 TDI. The MPG display showed that I averaged 52 MPG on the journey down to the caravan and 32 MPG on the return journey. Does that seem correct? I did have two 19kg propane cylinders in the boot of the car and a suitcase generator over the axle of the caravan.

I have a 2.0TDi and when towing with bikes on the car roof, averaged 34mpg doing just over 2,038 towing miles on motorways; Yorkshire to Prague and back. On a 314 mile stretch at 50/55mph with Ultimate diesel in the tank; got 37mpg, German & Czech motorway.

32 mpg? That's all I get without the caravan / trailer

The Skoda sounds like a winner, 4wd too!
